A Strict Routine May Not Work For Everyone During Lockdown

I stopped counting the days. All I know is that we are slowly entering our fifth week of national lockdown. I also know that each week, each day looks different and comes with unexpected emotions. We’ve accepted that for the most part.

Every evening I use Medium as my evening newspaper and go through articles, reading about other people’s experiences. I love to learn about the individual experience, each unique, each interesting that brings new views into thought. Most of them have a common piece of advice to get through this period — make a schedule and try to stick to it. I don’t disagree; I have a different perspective.

I do believe that organizing your day, to get through it easier, helps. Instead, for me, that would kill any shred of motivation I have left.

I am a freelancer. Before the lockdown, my calendar was filled with meetings, writing, drop-offs, and pick-ups from school, taking my daughter to different afterschool activities she loves. Apart from that, I had to keep an eye on my husband’s schedule to not overlap with any of my classes; make time to clean the house and cook; make a meal plan for the entire week to at least not ask ourselves every day — “What’s for dinner tonight?” — a question which in our house a few years ago drove us into madness.
