“I have this new game on my Ipad! Want to see?” A seven-year-old approaches my daughter in the park. My daughter, six years old, looks into the screen of her new friend’s Ipad, smiles, shrugs, then she runs to go up the stairs of the slide again.

The mom of said seven-year-old gives me a look that I can feel burning my right side, even if my eyes are focused on the book in my hands. She fusses a few times to grab my attention and a soon as I lift my gaze for a moment, she speaks:

“Does she not have a tablet yet?” The mom asks, pointing at my daughter.

“No, she doesn’t,” I answer knowing very well that this conversation can go very wrong in just a few seconds. It’s one of the reasons I always bring a book with me. People tend to leave me alone when they see me read.

“Oh, you will fall into that trap soon enough.” The mom releases a burst of shallow laughter, which I perceive to be a tad wicked.

“I doubt it.” I offer, with no room for argument.

Intrigued, the mom shifts her position to face me.

“How do you think you will do that, living in this world where technology is everywhere, and they can see it. I mean, you have a phone, she must see you on it…
